Menotropin (HMG) Benefits

HMG is mainly used to treat infertility in men and women. It stimulates ovulation in women who suffer from ovulatory dysfunction not caused by the ovarian failure. It may also be given to those who need to develop multiple oocytes for use on assisted reproductive methods such as in vitro fertilization and gamete intrafallopian transfer. Menotropin (HMG) may also be helpful among infertile males, particularly the ones with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

HMG can also induce ovulation in women with endometriosis, PCOS, or problems with the pituitary gland. Around 80% of the women who use HMG will ovulate within three cycles and 60% of them are likely to become pregnant. However, up to six cycles may be required to generate the desired results.

How Does Menotropin (HMG) Work?

HMG is designed for women who need to stimulate their ovaries to develop mature follicles and become fertile. It can also be used in men to stimulate the production of sperm. While there are some reservations about using the urine of menopausal women to create the drug, this medication is generally safe and effective. Even so, recombinant gonadotropins are now used as an alternative. The recombinant process allows for pure FSH or LH production so there’s no need to extract them from urine. However, there are no confirmed differences in purity, safety, or clinical efficacy among the two treatments.

Like any other medication, there are some side effects associated with the drug. The most common one is hyper-ovarian stimulation, wherein there are too many follicles forming inside the ovaries, which can cause discomfort and pain in the abdominal area. The other less severe side effects include headaches, mood swings, lethargy, aches, and tenderness of the breasts.

Additionally, not all women may use Menotropin (HMG). Those who already have high levels of FSH in their bodies won’t be benefited much by this medicine. It is also won’t be effective on those who suffer from thyroid or adrenal gland dysfunction and abnormal vaginal bleeding. Those who have ovarian cysts and pituitary gland tumors or lesions can’t use it as well. As a controlled medication, HMG should always be used with extreme precaution and advice from a qualified health expert.
